Alameda City, CA Flavor Ban

/Alameda City, CA Flavor Ban

The city of Alameda, CA is considering an overhaul to their Tobacco Retail License (TRL) which includes a ban on the sales of flavored vapor products, according to the draft ordinance they have put together. The introduction of this ordinance will possibly be scheduled for November 7th. Before that happens, though, there are two opportunities for vapers and stakeholders to express their concerns and explain the unintended consequences of denying adults access to smokeless alternatives to cigarettes that are scientifically accepted to be at least 95% safer. If this ordinance passes it will become effective 30 days after the adoption and enforcement would start July 1st, 2019.

The two meetings will be held at the address listed below and we strongly urge vapers and vapor retailers to attend one or both of these meetings which will be held on;

  • September 5th at 6PM
  • September 10th at 9AM

The ordinance sets out to include the following;

  • Bans the sale of flavored tobacco including menthol, mint and wintergreen;
  • Bans retailer redemption of coupons and discounts;
  • Minimum pack of 6 cigars, except cigars retail price of at least $5;
  • Minimum price of cigarettes $7 (adjusted annually based on CPI)
  • Minimum price of little cigars $7 (adjusted annually based on CPI)
  • Minimum price of cigars $5 (adjusted annually based on CPI)
  • Bans tobacco sales in pharmacies;
  • No license for retailers within 1,000 feet from broadly defined youth populated areas;
  • Limits the number of retailers by population (1/2,500 residents) approximately 29 retailers;
